AUGUSTA, Ga.---The city of Augusta is taking on a major storm drain replacement off Meadowbrook Drive. They're using $130,000 of your tax money. Leaders say if they don't act it could spell disaster for a big part of the city.
Neil Johnson is setting out on foot. His street closed for major drainage repairs.
"Every time it rains real hard," said Johnson. "Water [comes] up to the top of your tires."
Mr. Johnson says he's battled the issue for years.
"Oh lord," said Johnson. "Ever since I have been here."
The city is now digging into to the problem. Some power lines must be relocated.
"It's long overdue," said Johnson.
The city is installing new 72 inch cement pipes. You would be surprised at the condition of the massive pile of rusted steal that was running underground.
"This is a problem throughout the county," said Dennis Stroud who is Assistant Director of Public Services. "We want concrete pipe underneath all roadways because it's certainly more stronger and more durable."
But it won't be cheap. Augusta commissioners approved more than $130,000 in emergency funds for this one project.
"That was an area we were looking for a disaster," said Stroud. "We immediately brought contractors in to make the repairs."
Perhaps better and drier days are ahead.
"Thank God," said Mr. Johnson.
Workers told News 12 that moving that power pole should not impact customers.
