AUGUSTA, Ga.---Should you have flood insurance? Augusta is updating its flood maps for the first time in ten years. You may now find yourself in a high risk area.
The flood maps get a major overhaul in September that could leave you paying hundreds. Many areas that were considered a moderate risk could now move to high risk. That means that you may be advised to purchase flood insurance that can average $550 a year.
Rates change with the levels of risk. So will Augustans who were told they did not need insurance now be told a different a story.
"It's really not a yes or no question," said Collins Brown with Georgia Floodplain management. "It's site specific."
To find out if you are at a higher risk you can stop by a public meeting at the Carrie Mays Center from 6 PM to 8 PM on Wednesday.
