NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C.---North Augusta Police Chief Lee Wetherington tells News 12 he is retiring after 37 years, effective February 17, 2009.

Wetherington says he wants to spend more time with his family and look for opportunities that aren't as demanding.

Last month, Wetherington was at the center of some controversy over a provocative email he sent from his work account. Wetherington says that scandal was "a bump in the road, and I won't say it didn't bring stress on the family. But it didn't have anything to do with (my decision to retire)."

Howie, whats your beef? The mans retiring and you still keep running your mouth. Seems suspicious how you always know some "inside info" about everything he does. How do you know what hes doing anyway, you stalking him?? Do you not have a life? Apparently not haha

If this move is just so he can spend more time with his family due to wife close call... Then why is he meeting with Hunt and taking tours of the jail... Is he tring be the next in charge there?

It appears that everyone is trying to paint Chief Wetherington as a saint-a saint he is not. A racist maybe, but far from being a saint. North Augusta will be much better upon his retirement. Personally, I can't wait until February 19, 2009. I've had opportunity to be in Chief Wetherington's company and he's not personable, community friendly and certainly not a saint. Whether he admits it or not, he is retiring because he feels he is above the reprimand he received over the email issue. Wetherington, don't do North Augusta any favors....RETIRE TODAY! Secondly, I don't believe Tim Pearson will be the next chief, but I am confident the city of North Augusta will hire someone more capable than you. I nominate William Mays, Jr., he's a true pubic servant, Wetherington, you could learn a lesson or two from him.

But it didn't have anything to do with (my decision to retire)." Thats a riot !!! I am sure the City Admin just called him in the office for no reason after getting the Mayor to open his eyes and getting on board along with council had nothing to do with it either...lol There is light at the end of the tunnel, and it will get here on 02/17/09... :-)
