COLUMBIA COUNTY--Driving into Columbia County lately you can't miss all those new buildings. Loads of new businesses are going up there. So why when times are so bad are people still willing to invest money there?

Let's count, 4 new grocery stores, at least 4 restaurants and a handful of other businesses all have opened or will open before long in Evans and Martinez. Times may be tight in a lot places, but maybe not as much in Columbia County.

Welcome to Columbia County's newest place to grab a bite, the Mellow Mushroom.

"For so long, there was nothing to do. Now there's tons of stuff to do." said one customer

"I live in Richmond County, work in Columbia County. Love the new places to eat. You get tired of the same old places." said another.

If you don't like the same old places, you don't have to look far to find a new one lately.

This Cracker Barrel just opened up and this Chili's is only a month or two away from opening if you want your baby-back-ribs.

And if you prefer to cook your own meals at home, you've got options too.

This new Food Lion on North Belair Road is your newest choice for groceries.

"It's convenient for the neighborhood." said one customer.

"That's the great part, it's so close." said another.

So what does all this mean? Well, for some folks, it means new business and Columbia County create a recipe for success.

"Columbia County is one of the fastest growing counties in the state." said Mellow Mushroom store manager Shawn Ledford.

"We knew there was big growth going on here." said Food Lion District Manager Jim Braswell.

The Columbia County Chamber of Commerce says that growth and the fact that the economic downturn has avoided this area makes it an inviting place for new businesses.

Meaning, get used to the sights and sounds of construction, more will surely be coming.

The Chamber says Columbia County has stayed steady. Little highs and little lows and that is helping this business growth tremendously. Not to mention, people here love to eat.
