Tools available for Columbia Co. parents to keep track of school buses

COLUMBIA COUNTY, Ga. (WRDW) -- On Tuesday morning, thousands of feet will hit the pavement in Columbia County as students head back to class, and a lot of those feet will climb school bus steps for their ride.

"It can be nerve-racking at the beginning because you always worry about them," said Rachel Cadwell.

Cadwell's children have been part of the Columbia County School System for more than five years now.

"They've ridden since they've been here [with] no problems," she said.

But there have been problems in the past.

"I know there were some issues where kids were on the bus a lot longer than they needed to be," Cadwell said. "Getting off on the wrong stops, having to ride two buses to get to school."

The district has continued taking steps to help parents keep up with their kids while they're traveling. One tool they're urging parents to check is the Daily Bus Changes link on the school system's website.

"Daily Bus Changes is a big tool and it's on our website, on the home page," said DeWayne Porter, the district's transportation director. "Every morning and every afternoon we post those changes that are going to take place in the course of the day."

And now it's smartphone capable, so parents can check the routes for any changes while they're on the go.

"They can look at that at work, on their smartphone," he said. "And that'll solve a lot of the problems, answer a lot of questions that they might have."

Cadwell uses the link regularly.

"I've used it pretty much every year. Sometimes when the bus is maybe even a little late, I want to just make sure. Especially in the morning," she said.

And she's glad for the smartphone capabilities, giving her even more piece of mind.

"Of course, at the beginning of the year, you're always kind of nervous," she said.
