Tax-free holiday weekend in SC gives parents opportunity to stock up on school supplies

News 12 This Morning / Friday, Aug. 2, 2012

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- When retailers open their doors on Friday, shoppers will be exempt from paying the South Carolina state sales tax of 6 percent and any other local sales taxes the local county might impose at checkout.

The holiday continues through midnight on Sunday, Aug. 5.

Here's a look at what you can expect to get a good discount on:

  • Pens
  • Pencils
  • Paper
  • Notebooks
  • Bookbags
  • Shoes
  • Computers
  • Bed linens

Some items excluded from the tax-free holiday include:

  • Jewelry
  • Makeup
  • Watches
  • Furniture

Elizabeth Rraiford, manager at Kmart in North Augusta, said, "Please don't wait until the last day. Sunday it will be jammed packed."

Even if you can't head out this weekend, don't worry.

Georgia's tax-free holiday is next weekend. That will be the first tax-free holiday since 2009. For a list of all the items included and items that are not included, click here.
