DENMARK, S.C. (WRDW) -- An investigation is underway in Bamberg County after 24 batteries were stolen from school buses some time between Friday afternoon and early Monday morning.

Denmark Police Chief Leroy Grimes says all but two school buses were hit by a suspect or suspects.

"I actually believe it was some subjects working as a team together," he says. "They went out and removed the batteries, and actually, from what I believe, they tossed them across the fence."

The buses are stored at Denmark-Olar Middle School. Chief Grimes says his investigator did not find fingerprints, but he did find impressions where batteries were tossed over the fence. He also noticed dead grass where battery acid was apparently spilled.

Chief Grimes speculates the batteries will likely be sold for scrap.

"With the school system, they probably started school a few minutes late this morning, because they had to replace the batteries in the buses," says Chief Grimes.

In fact, Monday was the first day back for students there. Officials say the thefts affected pickup times Monday morning, but most students got to school around 9 a.m.

Superintendent Dr. Thelma Sojourner says the batteries have been replaced, so it should not be a continuing problem.

Chief Grimes advises anyone with tips to call Bamberg County Dispatch at (803) 245-3000.
