Aiken Co. offering free option for adult education

AIKEN COUNTY, S.C. (WRDW) -- For Aiken County adults thinking about going back to school, there's one program working to make that decision easier.

"Our registration and classes for all of our different programs with all of our different sites will be free," said Pat Keating.

Being able to offer this is something Keating, the new Adult Education director for the district, is excited about.

"We're offering this service to our citizens and we're very, very pleased that we're able to do that," Keating said. "This is the first year that it will be free."

And the range of classes offered by this program is vast.

"Diploma, GED, WorkKeys, ESL training for English second language students, eight-step remediation and family literacy as well," Keating said.

These courses are for anyone over the age of 17 in Aiken County who wants to learn.

"They could be the non-traditional student that may have had road blocks or hurdles in his or her way," Keating said. "Or it could be someone who's getting back into the job market. It could be someone coming back from being a stay-at-home parent getting back into the workforce."

About 1,100 students participated in Adult Education last year.

"We're very excited about that number, but we want to increase that," Keating said.

Giving folks these options for free is a service Keating feels is important for the community.

"I think its essential," he said. "A lot of our learners, a lot of the folks that we will serve, they need us. This is just one more way that we will better serve our learners."

Aiken County's Adult Education registration starts Monday, Aug. 26, but you can sign up any time throughout the year. Click here for more information.
