Best ways to save on back-to-school shopping during Ga.'s tax-free weekend

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- Georgia's tax-free weekend rolls around again Friday and Saturday.

Tasha Raby, mother of five, is looking forward to saving on her back-to-school shopping.

"Everything -- school clothes, book bags, school supplies -- it's expensive," she said.

That's exactly what Assistant Store Manager Laura Hawes has been keeping stocked at the K-Mart off Gordon Highway.

"Especially the underwear, the clothing -- all well stocked," Hawes said. "We make sure all the merchandise is pushed to the floor."

But Hawes says there are several items that won't be tax free -- items that normally surprise parents.

"They need to understand that it's only on backpacks, clothing items, school supplies," she explained. "Those items to prepare the students for returning back to school."

Computers and other electronics like e-readers are also included.

But items that will not be tax free this weekend include things like jewelry, cosmetics and video games.

There are also price caps to the tax-free items. For clothes, "There's is a limit. Anything beyond $100 will be taxed," Hawes explained.

For school supplies, the cap is $20. And for computers, any purchase beyond $1,000 will be taxed.

But there's still a way to get the most savings on your shopping list.

For example, if you've got $200 worth of clothes, "Just do it in two $100 increments," Hawes said.

And you'll save on your entire purchase.

It's an idea Raby says she'll be using this tax-free weekend.

"It'll help big time," Raby said.

The same idea will work for school supplies. For example, if you've got $40 worth of pens, notebooks, etc., split the transaction in two and both purchases will remain entirely tax free.
