AUGUSTA, Ga. -- With the ringing of the bell, the sound of the routine rush to class hit Cross Creek High School's halls a little earlier this year.

Emily Painter, the lead teacher for Eighth Grade Transition Academy, said, "Their first period starts with either reading, math or high school 101 prep class."

For two weeks, more than 100 students are taking part in the transitional academy to get ready for high school.

Students like 14-year-old Daren Newton are getting a crash course in time management.

"The skill level is going to be higher," Newton said.

The mentors are current high school students, there to help with the process.

"The freshmen that come in August 13th will be more prepared than other freshmen," said Sinclair Jacobs, a student mentor.

"They've gone around the school, they've seen how long it takes to go to the restroom, talk to your friends, open your locker and get to your next class on time," Painter said.

The students from three different middle schools are picked based on their CRCT scores. Lead teachers hope to improve their math scores through individualized lesson plans.

Newton has one goal in mind for next school year as he works to get a head start.

"Getting my grades up," he said.

"If you don't manage your time, you will definitely slack off," Jacobs said.

The practical lessons are designed to set these students up for four years of academic success. The students will be tracked throughout their high school career to see how well they perform. The school will be working closely with the graduation coach at Cross Creek to make sure in four years they have a diploma in hand.
