-- 159 deaths, seven confirmed as swine flu.

U.S.
-- One death confirmed in Texas, 23-month-old boy from Mexico.
-- 93 cases confirmed by CDC and state officials:
-- 51 in New York;
-- 14 in California;
-- 16 in Texas;
-- 3 in Maine;
-- 2 in Massachusetts;
-- 2 in Kansas;
-- 1 in Arizona;
-- 1 in Nevada;
-- 1 in Michigan;
-- 1 in Ohio;
-- 1 in Indiana.

CANADA
-- 16 cases confirmed
-- All non-fatal.

WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION ALERT
-- Pandemic alert level at 5 out of 6.

Six phases of pandemic alert:
-- Phase 1. No viruses circulating in animals that have been reported to cause infections in humans.
-- Phase 2. An animal flu virus has caused infections in humans in the past and is considered to be a potential pandemic threat.
-- Phase 3. An animal or mixed animal-human virus has caused occasional cases or small clusters of disease, but the virus does not spread easily.
-- Phase 4. The new virus can cause sustained outbreaks and is adapting itself to human spread.
-- Phase 5. The virus has spread into at least two countries and is causing even bigger outbreaks. Governments should ready pandemic preparedness plans and increase detection systems for potential cases.
-- Phase 6. More outbreaks in at least two regions of the world; the pandemic is under way.
