AUGUSTA, Ga. -- A multi-million dollar road project could be coming to Richmond County. The plan is to realign Berckmans Road with Alexander Drive, impacting more than 50 homes.

"Are you talking about kicking people out of their homes?" we asked Traffic Engineer Steve Cassell.

"No," Cassell replied, "there is no relocation as part of this. We may need a portion of parcel or yard."

The idea is to create a straight shot from Wheeler Road down to Riverwatch Parkway.

"We've looked at five of them [options]," Cassell said.

Each option moves Berckmans from its current location at the Augusta water tower down the road where Stanley Drive becomes Alexander Drive.

"If you live along Berckmans Road, there is going to be an impact on you," Cassell said. "We're going to be adding left turn lanes between Wheeler and Ingleside; we're proposing at this point to put a roundabout at Ingleside and Berckmans Road."

The plan also calls for new street lights and bike lanes similar to the recent Alexander Drive improvements.

"Sidewalks will run the length of the project," Cassell said.

It is part of an effort to make the area more pedestrian friendly for the Masters Tournament. Did we mention the suggested pedestrian underpasses?

"Pedestrians and cars," Cassell said. "It makes you nervous when you see that many people in the roadway. We're looking for a way to separate them."

It will all ultimately need your green light as part of the next transportation sales tax vote. The TSPLOST vote is July 31.
