Snapped tree blocking westbound Greene Street in Olde Town

Sunday, March 4, 2012

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Richmond County EMA says a large tree split in half during a windy Sunday afternoon is blocking the westbound side of the 400 block of Greene Street in Olde Town Augusta.

When the tree split, it made a loud noise that some people said sounded like a car had struck the tree or even an earthquake. The piece of the tree that was knocked off fell across the street and in front of a neighboring apartment building.

The tree is in front of Bell & Brigham law office at 457 Greene St. No buildings sustained significant damage, no cars were hit and no injuries were reported.

Traffic on westbound Greene Street will have to detour at 4th Street to either Telfair Street or Ellis Street, then turn on 5th Street to continue going westbound on Greene Street. Eastbound Greene Street is open.
