RIDGE SPRING, S.C. -- An 18-year-old boy and his 13-year-old brother are dead after a car accident in Ridge Spring Wednesday night.
"I just know that the school felt empty today," said classmate Jordan Reeves. "It felt dead."
The accident happened on Ridge Spring Highway only about a half mile from the boys' home.
The 13-year-old died at the scene. His big brother was rushed to a hospital and then taken off life support just before noon on Thursday.
"Just yesterday he was talking about I'm so excited; tomorrow's my last day all I have to do is come in here and take an exam and I can get out of here," Reeves said.
But for 18-year-old Travis Dunn, that tomorrow will never come and just two weeks from graduation, his friends still can't believe it.
"I walked into fifth period and I set my books down and I just kinda looked over to where he normally sat and I just started crying," Reeves said. "I mean I couldn't stop crying 'cause you think he just sat there yesterday and we just goofed around yesterday and now he's gone."
Both Travis and his younger brother, eighth grader Daniel Dunn, were driving home from dinner Wednesday night during heavy rain when they collided head on with a minivan.
"Everybody kept on saying, 'I wish it was just a dream, I wish all this was not happening,'" Reeves said.
"I have never seen my school this quiet," said classmate Bryanna Jones. "It was really hard. A lot of guys were really upset, guys that I wouldn't think would cry were crying and that just made it even harder."
It was the last day of school for the senior class before their graduation on May 31. For a class of about 50, this loss leaves a huge hole.
"That's the problem with the senior class," Jones said. "It's not gonna be the same without him there."
The accident teaches a tough lesson about life and death.
"Life is short," Reeves said. "Live life to the fullest. It could end 'cause we're not promised tomorrow."
The accident is still under investigation. We are told the boys were not wearing seat belts. The two people in the minivan were sent to the hospital, but we have no word on their condition.
This is the third local high school senior to die in a car accident in just two weeks. A senior from Burke County High School and a senior from Harlem High School both lost their lives just last week.
