AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- A Sunday night car chase ended with a Richmond County patrol car in a ditch and the suspect in the hospital.

Deputies say the chase began at the Providence Apartments on Southgate Drive around 10:30 p.m. and ended on Richmond Hill Road.

Investigators say the patrol car was damaged while the deputy was trying to stop 27-year-old Roderick Haynes from fleeing.

Haynes allegedly tried to jump across the hood of the patrol car, shattering the windshield. Investigators say the deputy, who had swerved to keep Haynes from jumping across the hood, jumped the curb and went into the wooded area, which is when Haynes rolled off the hood.

Haynes was hospitalized after the chase but is now in the Richmond County Jail charged with aggravated assault, obstruction of a law enforcement officer and drug charges.

The deputy has been cleared of any wrong-doing in the chase.
