AIKEN COUNTY, S.C. (WRDW) -- The minor who died from a single-car accident on I-20 Saturday was identified as Matthew Lawrence Johnson, according to the Lexington County Coroner’s Office. The 16-year-old is from Columbia, S.C.
The wreck happened on I-20 westbound near mile marker 38 at 2:30 p.m. Investigators say they believe the accident was caused by the right tire blowing out, causing the driver to lose control of the car.
Officials say a 2006 Dodge SUV was traveling westbound on I-20 when it overcorrected to the right, crossing lanes to the left and eventually overturning several times before coming to a rest.
Eight people were in the car, including two adults and four minors. The front passengers, both adults, were wearing seat belts. All minors sitting the back two rows were not wearing seat belts. All four minors were ejected from the car, and one was declared dead at the scene.
The driver, 38-year-old LaShonda Wood, was taken to the hospital by ambulance. One of the minors was airlifted to the hospital.
I-20 was shut down for several hours, causing traffic on the interstate.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the accident.
