AUGUSTA, Ga. -- A 73-year-old man has died after being hit by a vehicle on Washington Road near Stevens Creek Road.
The accident was called in around 6:30 a.m.
The Coroner's Office has released the name of the man, Robert Matthew Bancroft, in hopes someone will come forward and help them find his family members.
The accident happened in front of the America's Best Value Inn hotel on Washington Road, right near Stevens Creek Road and I-20.
An SUV was driving on Washington Road toward Evans when Bancroft stepped into the road, possibly walking toward the bus stop. He was struck by the SUV and pronounced dead at the scene at 7:08 a.m.
Investigators say Bancroft was from Alabama and may have been staying with a friend at a local hotel. He is said to be homeless.
Deputies say the driver will not be charged with the accident, but there were problems with his license and registration. Deputies tell us he could face charges if that is not resolved.
