AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- Operation Thunder started on Thursday night, and in the first night alone, law enforcement handed out more than 140 citations, including 11 DUIs.
And they're planning to keep their eyes on the streets all weekend.
"We actually found a 2-year-old sitting on the floor board of the car," said Lt. Lewis Blanchard.
Proper child restraints, safety belts and driving under the influence are all things Richmond County and the Governor's Office of Highway Safety looked for at the safety check point on Windsor Road.
This is night two of Operation Thunder, a 90-day program that will increase patrols along the road of Richmond County.
"Our biggest concern is last year, Richmond County Sheriff's Office made 44 death notifications due to accidents on our roadways," Lt. Blanchard said.
And they are looking to make a huge dent in those numbers. They've already made huge strides in one night.
"We had 11 DUIs, we had some drug cases [and] we actually got some people on some outstanding warrants," Blanchard said.
All from a routine safety check.
"Our main goal is safety. The reduction of accidents, injuries and deaths," Blanchard said. "Forty-four deaths in our county alone last year is completely unacceptable."
That's a number they're fighting to reduce, which is something people on the roads have definitely noticed.
"By driving down the roads here, you see you people [are] flying," said Arthur Gaddist, who lives in Richmond County.
Even though these safety stops are slowing traffic, Gaddist says he's glad to see them.
"I think it's a good idea to have people on alert to watch the speed limit," Gaddist said.
