New traffic light on Deans Bridge Road focusing on lessening congestion

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- Jewell Fulkner knows the headache of driving on Deans Bridge Road.

"Yeah, that's a good word for it, stressful," Fulkner said.

She lives not too far from the Bobby Jones Expressway exit that has caused some issues in the past.

"People, when they come on to there, they don't even realize they are jumping into the main road up here," she said.

The Georgia Department of Transportation noticed and decided to do something to keep the Deans Bridge Road exit less congested.

Rodney Way and his team at the Georgia DOT drew up a plan to fix the intersection.

"We're removing two of the loops and adding two traffic lights at each one of those interchanges," Way said.

A year and a half and $23 million later, there is now a better way to control traffic.

"After the individuals exit today, they'll probably get used to it and probably find it a safer exit and are able to come to a controlled stop at the traffic light," he said.

All of this to help those like Fulkner, who takes a 5-mile detour to avoid the traffic every time she goes grocery shopping.

"When I leave here, I'll go down here around the corner and get on Lumpkin Road, hit Windsor Spring Road and go back to my house," she said.

But now, she's willing to give the finished intersection a second chance, possibly saving her time -- and even a headache.

"I think in the long run, I think the light is a very good idea," Fulkner said.

The intersection at the Gordon Highway exit off of Bobby Jones Expressway is seeing similar construction.
