AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The 7-year-old killed in an accident on Peach Orchard Road Monday morning has been identified.

Jamal Lovett was ejected from the backseat of the car and was pronounced dead at 9:07 a.m. He was taken to the GBI Augusta Lab for an autopsy.

The Richmond County Sheriff's Office says 30-year-old Michelle Lovett was driving northbound on Peach Orchard when she tried to make a left-hand turn onto Willis Foreman Road and was hit by a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado driving southbound.

As soon as the car was hit, it split into two, sending the back half of the car and the child in the backseat into a ditch. The female and child were both taken to the hospital in critical condition, where the child later died. The truck driver did not suffer injuries.

Lovett was a student at Willis Foreman Elementary School. The school says counselors are on site to help students and will be there until they are no longer needed.

Charges are pending against the truck driver.
