SYLVANIA, Ga. (AP) -- Authorities say a portion of a state highway has been closed after a dam collapsed in eastern Georgia.
Emergency management officials say the dam at Herbert Jacob Pond in Sylvania breached late Saturday night and sent water spilling across state Route 17 near Old Ogeechee Road.
Officials say the water pushed dirt from underneath the road and caused part of it to collapse.
Screven County Emergency Management Director Harvey Cryder tells WTOC-TV the pond was drained after the dam breached and the water has caused damage to nearby railroad tracks.
The Georgia Department of Transportation is working to determine how long roads will need to be closed.
Sylvania is about 25 miles northeast of Statesboro.
