HARLEM, Ga. -- A teen has died after a car accident in Columbia County Tuesday afternoon.
Columbia County Deputy Coroner Bonnie King says Jonathan Hartman passed away at 10:18 p.m.
Cpt. Steve Morris says the single-vehicle accident happened at Scotts Ferry Road and Sellars Road around 3 p.m. in Appling.
He says the 18-year-old Harlem High School senior was driving his Toyota 4Runner on Scotts Ferry Road. He left the roadway, over corrected and then overturned several times, hitting a tree.
Hartman was then airlifted to Georgia Health Sciences Medical Center.
Cpt. Morris says Hartman was wearing his seat belt at the time of the accident.
Hartman played for the school's football team.
The crash is still under investigation. We're told Hartman wished to be an organ donor.
A statement from Kiokee Baptist Church:
"Kiokee Baptist Church is deeply saddened to announce that Jonathan Hartman, son of Pastor Steve and Susan Hartman, has passed away as a result of injuries sustained when his car left the road Tuesday afternoon.
We know with unshakable certainty that Johnny is at home with Christ. Even so, this is a very difficult time for the Hartman family, our church and our community. Johnny was a beloved member of our church family; our hearts are broken at his loss, even as we acknowledge and rejoice in his new life in heaven.
Arrangements with Starling Funeral Home are incomplete at this time and will be posted on the church website once they are available. Food, flowers, cards and other expressions of sympathy may be delivered to the church. While your thoughts and prayers are deeply appreciated, we ask that our community please respect the privacy of the Hartman family during this time of grief."
