Engineers working to realign Berckmans Road, Alexander Drive

News 12 at 11 o'clock / Friday, May 25, 2012

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Traffic engineers are working on a major project that would realign Berckmans Road with Alexander Drive.

"There's a heavy movement of traffic that turns left at Berckmans and turns right on Alexander," traffic engineer Steve Cassell said. "Once you line those up, it'll improve the connectivity north and south."

They're working on about five or six different design plans, but we won't see the plans until June 12 at the Julian Smith Casino where you can ask questions. That meeting is from 4 to 7 p.m.

What we do know is that lots of property could come into play, including Augusta National's.

"[Augusta National] is going to have some concerns," Cassell said "They're as anxious as everybody else."

And houses on or near Berckmans Road could be impacted. Lots of people in the area have heard rumors they may lose a chunk of their yard.

"Nothing's firm right now," Cassell said.

He did indicate most people near the area will be affected, but to what degree will be based on which design engineers go with. As far as actual construction goes, the city does not yet have the funds, so there is no set date.
