Driving across private property to make turns illegal

BARNWELL, S.C. – The Barnwell Police Department is warning the public that they will begin ticketing people who use business’ parking lots to avoid traffic lights.

Recently, two main intersections have caused traffic accidents and near misses of pedestrians. The intersections of Main Street, Allen Street and Jackson with Dunbarton Blvd. and Ellenton Street at Dunbarton.

According to the law, driving across private property to make turns is illegal, including sidewalks, driveways, parking lots or business entrances at any intersection to cut a corner purposely. The fine for this violation is $500.00.

The Police Department has received many complaints and will be focusing their efforts on enforcing the law.
