AUGUSTA, Ga. -- A Richmond County deputy was taken to the hospital for minor injuries after an accident early Thursday morning.

Deputies say it all started around 1:15 a.m. when they responded to a call that a driver was failing to maintain a lane on Swanee Quintet Boulevard. The driver, who was a woman, would not pull over and started leading the deputies on a chase.

When the woman reached the intersection of Swanee Quintet Boulevard and Martin Luther King Boulevard, she tried to avoid hitting a stopped car.

That's when she swerved and hit a light pole. The light pole cracked in half, causing some traffic lights to fall down.

Some of those lights fell down on top on one of the deputies' patrol cars, causing damage. Another deputy following the chase went to check on the deputy to see if the he or she was OK, then at some point, the damaged patrol car was backing up and ran over the deputy's leg.

The injured deputy is now out of the hospital. The deputy's name has not been released at this time.

The other deputy suffered no injuries.

The woman who hit the power pole was not injured and taken into custody.
