AIKEN COUNTY, S.C. (WRDW) -- A woman is dead after an accident on I-20 Monday morning.
Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton says a 43-year-old woman from Rockdale County, Ga., was pronounced dead at the scene. Carlton says the woman, whose name has not been released at this time, died from multiple body trauma. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday in Newberry, S.C.
Carlton says the woman was driving a 2006 Nissan Pathfinder when she hit the rear of a semi truck that was being driven by 58-year-old Herbert Miller of Asheville, N.C. He says the woman had her seat belt on.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol says Miller had stopped on I-20 due to construction when he was hit. Carlton says Miller does not have any life-threatening injuries.
According to Carlton, excess speed is considered to be a contributing factor in the accident.
The accident happened near the overpass of Exit 1 on I-20 westbound at 11:20 a.m.
Another accident happened around the same time near mile marker 5.
AIKEN COUNTY, S.C. (WRDW) -- Traffic is backed up on I-20 westbound on the South Carolina side after two accidents.
One is at Exit 1, while the other is at mile marker 5.
The Aiken County coroner has been called to the scene of the accident at Exit 1.
Crews are also doing roadwork in the area, which has one lane of traffic closed.
This comes a day after 17 wrecks happened on I-20 eastbound and westbound within the same stretch of highway. The South Carolina Highway Patrol says the weather was a major factor in those wrecks. One person was taken to the hospital.
