Contract set for final part of Fall Line Freeway

Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013

ATLANTA (AP) -- Georgia transportation officials have approved a contract for the final section of a highway between Columbus and Augusta.

The Georgia Department of Transportation on Wednesday announced a $58.3 million contract for the last stretch of the Fall Line Freeway.

The final nine miles of the 215-mile freeway are set to be built in Baldwin and Wilkinson counties. The project includes construction of a new four-lane road with a total of eight bridges over the Oconee River and two creeks. It should be finished at the end of 2015.

The Fall Line Freeway is part of the Governor's Road Improvement Program. The corridor includes new roadway sections as well as the widening and improvement of existing highways to result in a four-lane freeway stretching from Columbus to Macon to Augusta.
