WAYNESBORO, Ga. -- A 3-year-old little girl is dead after she was hit by a logging truck in Waynesboro.
The accident happened around 9 a.m. Thursday on Highway 56, about 2 miles north of town.
Her family tells us little Ziyon Green was deaf and mute. She was running across the highway when she ran right underneath the tires of the truck, leaving her family heartbroken and wondering why.
"She was so sweet ... she was so sweet and I just want to hold her, I just want to hold her," said Ziyon's aunt, Shanaya Brown.
Brown said her niece was very bright, although she couldn't hear or speak.
"She was born deaf in both ears, but she was very good at her sign language. She was very smart. She was smart for her to not be able to hear ... she was very smart. She knew more sign language than me," Brown said.
Georgia State troopers say Ziyon was playing in the yard with another toddler when she ran across the highway. As she was running back, she ran right under the back wheels of the logging truck.
"I looked out there and she was just laying there. She was just laying there too peacefully on her stomach, like she was asleep. I just want her to wake up," Brown said. "The officer met me before I could even get out there. He told me she was ... he told me she was dead. I just started screaming, I didn't know what else to do I just started screaming."
Now as this family plans a funeral, they have a message for your family at home.
"Watch your children at all times. Watch them at all times. You never know when something like this could happen. I would have never imagined in a million years that it would hit me so close, but you never know. Just watch your children at all times," Brown said.
The Georgia State Patrol says the driver of the truck was very upset and will not face charges for the accident.
However, we're told because there weren't any adults watching the children, the Division of Family and Children Services has been called in to investigate. They will help determine if charges should be filed against any of the adults.
