AUGUSTA---Expect a major traffic change for Masters. Berckmans Road will be a one way street every afternoon.
"I think if it helps the flow of traffic," said Matt Loss, who drives the stretch every day to work, "let's do it."
But not everyone is ready to go that route.
"I think it is a bad idea from the perspective of the residents and everybody in this area," said Willie Hampton.
The city held a public meeting to explain the changes before people living along the stretch.
"To give them a chance to beat me up I guess," said traffic engineer Steve Cassell.
All traffic will be routed away from Washington Road and up Berckmans Road. The one-way operation will start at Cherry Lane from 4PM to 9PM. The right lane will turn right on Ingleside Drive. The left lane will keep straight through the intersection.
"You are in the middle of the hornet's nest out there," said Cassell. "We're trying to make it better and get things moving quicker."
"I'm trying to move about 50,000 cars and then I have another 30,000 trying to come in," said Cassell. "You run out of roadway."
"I just don't see how it would help," said Hampton. "It seems like it would be more a hindrance."
"We feel that if we are going to improve things, this is something that is a key part of it," said Cassell.
"It is a necessary evil," said Loss. "I am a huge fan of the Masters. I will cooperate."
This is the first phase of the traffic plan. The full plan will be unveiled two weeks before Masters.
