LANGLEY S.C. -- Investigators say the man killed in a fatal accident on Highway 421 may have been involved in a hit-and-run earlier that day and may have been drunk while driving.

Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton says 22-year-old Patrick Key Jr. was driving his 1996 Oldsmobile north when he crossed the center lane, hitting 35-year-old Latina Boyd around 7 a.m.

Boyd, who was driving a 2010 Hyundai, was taken to the hospital. She is said to be in good condition. Boyd was not wearing a seat belt.

Key was pronounced dead at the scene around 8:15 a.m.

Witnesses told police that Key was speeding and that he had been involved in a hit-and-run earlier that morning in North Augusta.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol and the Aiken County Coroner's Office are investigating the case. Key's toxicology is pending.

This is the 15th fatal crash in Aiken County this year.
