For the past few years, Aiken County has been the leader in traffic deaths. The majority of the accidents involved people that were not wearing seatbelts.
The Aiken County coroner said 23-year-old Stephanie Cowart of Augusta died Saturday night after her Ford pickup truck rolled over and crashed on Gregg Highway. The coroner told News 12, Cowart was driving east on Gregg Highway near Graniteville, she apparently lost control of the vehicle and traveled more than 400 feet before overturning and being ejected from the vehicle. The coroner also said she was not wearing a seatbelt and that indications at the scene showed that she may have been either returning from or going to a party.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol is still investigating the crash.
This is the 30th person to die on Aiken County roads this year and it's still only September. Last year, 30 people died on the roads, but that was over an entire year, and in 2005 there were only 22.
