GRANITEVILLE, S.C.---A pickup and a semi collided on the Aiken-Augusta Highway shortly after 9 am this morning. One person is dead, and traffic was slow in the area for much of the morning.
It happened in the Graniteville area, not far from the Satcher Ford dealership and right in front of Bobby's Barbecue. The South Carolina Highway Patrol received the call shortly after 9:15.
21-year-old Richard Owens was driving north on US 1 in a 2007 Toyota pickup truck when he crossed through the median into the southbound lane and ran head-on into a tractor trailer truck driven by Andy Roman, Jr. of Alabama.
Witnesses say he seemed to have fallen asleep. The coroner says he'd worked at 12-hour shift at Kimberly-Clark overnight.
Owens was pronounced dead on the scene due to severe head trauma. He had been wearing his seat belt.
Roman was taken to the hospital. No charges have been filed.
Toxicology is pending. SCHP is investigating the crash, and the Aiken County Coroner's Office is investigating the death.
