Woman dead after bad wreck in Aiken

AIKEN, S.C.---A Beech Island woman is dead after a bad wreck in Aiken Wednesday morning that closed a busy intersection for hours.

The Aiken County coroner tells News 12 58-year-old Nancy Blas was driving west on Edgefield Avenue in a 1996 Hyundai when she failed to yield the right-of-way to a 2004 Chevrolet van heading north on York Street, driven by Gerald McCarty of Warrenville.

Blas was taken to Aiken Regional Medical Center and was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

McCarty was also transported from the scene by ambulance; his injuries are unknown.

Toxicology is pending, and the Aiken Department of Public Safety is investigating.

This is the 25th fatal crash in Aiken County for 2007.
