AUGUSTA, Ga.---Richmond County deputy Eric Sikes was declared brain dead last night at 11 o'clock. He was 24 years old.
Deputy Sikes was involved in an accident in his patrol car on his way to work from his home in Burke County on the morning of March 20.
He was on his way to the North Precinct Road Patrol when he went off Allen Road and ended up between some trees. Sikes was sent to the Burke County hospital, and was airlifted to MCG, where he was later pronounced brain dead.
Deputy Sikes' fellow officers say he started on the force about six months ago, and had only recently started going out on patrols on his own.
He is survived by a wife and child.
