New parking restrictions in downtown Aiken

December 6, 2007

AIKEN, S.C.---New parking restrictions are in effect in downtown Aiken. It is now illegal to park on Laurens Street or along Richland Avenue for more than two hours, and on the other side streets, you can only park for two hours if the spot is in front of a business.

Full enforcement of the new parking rule will come after the first of next year, and starting in March, the city will start fining drivers parked illegally.

Wasn't the parking problem one of the reasons the mall was built? We're back where we started. Hopefully something can be done because downtown is the way it should be.

Have Aiken city consider building a parking garage? I think that would be nice.

I have lived in Aiken County all my life and now live in the City for eleven yrs and think we are now back sliding to the days when the City was dead. The City has done wonderful things to build up business downtown, now what have you done. You are encouraging people to leave.

This new ruling is saying to me..."DON'T SHOP DOWN TOWN AIKEN, IF IT'S GOING TO TAKE MORE THAN 2 HOURS"!!!! I think whoever came up with this ruling just shot THE CITY in the foot!!!
