AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Michael Shaffer, Deputy Chief of Staff for Governor Nathan Deal, has been named Vice President of Government Relations/Chief Advocacy Officer for the Georgia Health Sciences Enterprise.

In his new role, which he will assume May 21, Shaffer will oversee local government affairs, as well as those for the states of Georgia and South Carolina. He also will work closely with Monty Philpot, GHSU’s Director of Federal Relations, who is the primary contact between federal elected officials and staff to advocate for legislation, regulation and policy that advances the tripartite missions of the enterprise.

As Deputy Chief of Staff for Gov. Deal, Shaffer is the top liaison to federal, state and local officials. He served as Deal’s campaign consultant leading up to the 2010 election and previously worked for the late U.S. Rep. Charlie Norwood (R-Ga.) and U.S. Rep. Paul Broun (R-Ga.).

“Michael’s winning personality and strategic mind have paid dividends to the Governor’s Office,” Deal said. “His constant behind-the-scenes work has played a huge role in two successful legislative sessions where we have passed difficult reforms and landmark legislation with broad bipartisan support. Michael’s talents will allow him to aid President Azziz’s ambitious aims for Georgia Health Sciences. In this way, he’ll continue to work with me as we build GHS into one of the top 50 academic health centers in the nation. This transition is a loss for our team, both professionally and personally, but we know that he’s the right man for the job.”

“Michael will bring a wealth of legislative expertise to his new role with Georgia Health Sciences and our new university,” said GHSU President Ricardo Azziz, who will oversee the university formed when GHSU consolidates with Augusta State University in 2013. “We feel incredibly fortunate to find someone with his background to join us at this pivotal time in our university history as we embrace the goal of becoming Georgia’s and the nation’s next great research university.”

A native of Augusta, Shaffer is a graduate of the University of South Carolina. He serves on the Board of Easter Seals of East Georgia.
