AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The Georgia Board of Regents officially approved the new name for the "New U" on Wednesday. But students at the medical school aren't too sure about the new name.
"I just feel like it might be nice if we had a name that kind of reflects what we do here," said Katherine Kerr, a first-year medical student at the Medical College of Georgia.
Huy Le, another student, agrees, saying, "It's kinda weird, to be honest."
And that seems to be the general consensus around campus.
Porter Young just started medical school in Augusta, and he says, "Right now it's just a little bit confusing as to how we're supposed to represent our school to the public."
"People are saying the Board of Regents is naming the school after themselves and the students had no say in it," said medical student John Dennison.
Dennison is no stranger to name changes.
"I recently graduated from North Georgia College and State University, and they recently had to consolidate with Gainesville State College, so they're going through a name change, too," he said.
He isn't exactly sure where he graduated from or where he's currently going to school, but he says students here aren't the only ones who are frustrated.
"A lot of the students at North Georgia don't like the idea of combining with a newer school, and they don't like the name change. They want to keep the original name," he said.
"I'm a first-year med student, so I just call it MCG, but when people ask me what's actually the name of your university, and it's just like, who really knows?" Porter said.
But some of the staff who have been at the university for a while say this isn't the first name change the school has been through, and it probably won't be the last.
"Change is part of life. It's not the name that matters but what's behind it," Paul Atwell said.
Atwell has worked at the university for 12 years, and he says folks will come around eventually.
"When people look at it in the near future, they'll say that's a great thing," he said.
Good news for the medical students, though. The medical school is continuing to use "Medical College of Georgia" as its school name. Students say when it comes time for the job search, they will just say they went to the Medical College of Georgia at Georgia Regents University.
