Start college on the right foot

(WRDW)--"I still feel like I'm not in college and it's the first week and we're starting classes," said Ariel Johnson.

Classes start tomorrow for college freshman Johnson, who goes to USC Aiken.

Now, she and two of her dorm mates are trying to prepare for this new phase in their lives--college.

"I haven't really been doing anything this summer...like no lie," said fellow USC Aiken freshman Elise Cromwell. "I haven't been doing anything. Well, other than reading the book which we had to do for class."

Luckily, reading ahead, whether it's assigned or not, is one of the first things recommended by Admissions Counselor Kristin Allen.

"Read the syllabus. It's right there," said Allen.

But, Allen says the key to transitioning from high school to college is organization.

"It's important that they plan their lives and schedule for their tests and exams and projects," said Allen. "And all of the things that are going on in their personal life as well."

Planning and organizing is right up Alicia Cook's alley.

"All my binders are like labeled. And I feel really bad but I have to be organized," said Alicia Cook, another USC Aiken freshman.

Another suggestion from Allen--

"Talk to your professors before issues start to arise," she said.

Something Johnson, Cromwell and Cook all say they're going to try in an effort to transition smoothly.

"I think developing a relationship with your professor and know you can count on them is really important," said Cook.

"I would rather go talk to them than just sit back and then turn a paper in and not be able to have a good grade," said Johnson.

"I want all A's and I'm not taking any less," said Cromwell. "I am there, I'm there!"
