AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The Richmond County Board of Education approved a new deputy superintendent and changes in the budget on Wednesday.

Academy of Richmond County Principal Tim Spivey is now deputy superintendent.

"I'm excited about the opportunity, but I'm a little apprehensive also," Spivey said.

Dr. James Whitson is retiring after being in charge while Dr. Frank Roberson recovered from brain surgery last year.

The Board of Education also decided to cut public safety officer positions and approved nine furlough days.
