AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Richmond County School Superintendent Dr. Frank Roberson had been wondering whether he'd keep his job at least since May.

Roberson has been recovering from emergency brain surgery, and the school board made a decision in May to let him work shortened days on a trial period to see whether or not he was fit for duty.

Then, Tuesday, the school board called a special meeting to discuss his progress. Roberson spent about a half an hour in executive session with board members. When he walked out of executive session, he had a smile on his face. Shortly after, the school board's attorney read a doctor's letter saying Roberson is indeed fit to perform the duties of school superintendent.

"Not being able to be as involved in the school day to day as I would have liked to have been, that probably was the biggest challenge," Roberson said of his recovery.

Now, he'll get that chance after the board voted unanimously to accept the doctor's orders and keep him as school superintendent.

"I don't have words to express the gratitude. I'm just anxious to be back providing the services that I need to provide for the students of Richmond County," he said.

However, the board also voted unanimously to meet with Roberson three separate times to discuss his medical evaluation as well as to set goals for this school year.

"To improve student achievement, that's the primary goal," Roberson said.

A goal he hopes to modify and meet repeatedly in the years ahead.

"[I'll be here] as long as this school board finds my services useful and productive," Roberson said.

The school board says his contract is up in August of 2013, and they'll have to make another decision whether to re-sign him then.
