Other Burke Co. parents fed up with dress code issues, district responds

BURKE COUNTY, Ga. (WRDW) -- Several parents reached out to News 12 after one Burke County mother spoke out about being fed up with her daughter getting in trouble because of what she was wearing. Now, the district is responding.

"You figure it puts her self-esteem down," said Cara Faulkner. "I mean, here she gets up in the morning and gets dressed in clothes that we buy her to go to school in that meets requirements, and then she's turned around."

Faulkner says she's not sure what to do after her 12-year-old granddaughter, Madison, was sent to in-school suspension at Burke County Middle School for a dress she was wearing.

She's one of several Burke County parents who reached out to News 12 after Lavonia Wilcox spoke out about her daughter being sent to ISS twice last week at the same school for dress code issues.

The county dress code policy states: "Skirts, dresses and shorts must be long enough to touch the top of the kneecap."

Faulker says she was called to bring Madison a change of clothes, stating her dress was too short.

"But it comes straight to Madison's knees," she explained. "And she's worn this dress twice. That was the third time she wore the dress."

The Burke County School District sent a statement to News 12 concerning dress code, stating parents are given options. If none of those options are chosen, only then are students put in ISS.

The district stresses, "These students continue to receive their assignments and they receive no educational penalty."

For parents like Faulker who feel their child was treated unfairly, the district officials urge parents to reach out to them. That's something Faulker says she'll try in an effort to keep Madison on the right track.

"Madison's an A/B honor roll student," Faulkner said. "Madison's never been in trouble in school."
