AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Georgia Regents University is now officially accredited, thanks to approval from SACS.

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges voted to approve the consolidation of Augusta State University and Georgia Health Sciences University on Tuesday.

The next step for the consolidation is receiving approval from the Georgia Board of Regents in January.

"Today marks an important milestone for both universities," said GHSU President Ricardo Azziz in a news release. "I am grateful to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges for its endorsement of our new university and to all the faculty, staff, students and alumni who have worked tirelessly to get us to this point. There is still much work to be done and we combine these two great institutions."

GRU had to present SACS members wiht a summary of its programs, features and changes.

The organization will make a visit to Augusta in the fall to check in.
