AUGUSTA, Ga. -- News 12 has just received a statement from Mayor Deke Copenhaver announcing his support of Georgia Regents University.

Copenhaver says he initially wanted the "New U" to be named the University of Augusta, but now that the decision on the name is final, he will support it.

“During the naming process I weighed in on several occasions with the committee that my own personal preference for the name would be the University of Augusta.

However, the decision has now been made and the Board of Regents has shared with me that the decision is definitely final. As mayor of Augusta, an Augusta College alum, a longtime ASU Foundation Trustee and a two-time 'A-Day' chair, no one would have liked to see Augusta as part of the new name more than me, but I didn’t get what I wanted and I’m willing to accept that and move on.

It should not go unnoticed nor unappreciated that Gov. Nathan Deal has set aside hundreds of millions of dollars to help ensure that Georgia Regents University is a long-term success and a nationally recognized institution which will be a major boost to the future growth of our city in a multitude of ways.

In moving forward I believe that the best expenditure of my time and efforts is to do everything possible to help the new university grow and prosper here in Augusta to the benefit of the citizens of our community educationally, economically and socially for generations to come.”
