JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ga. -- A Jefferson County High School teacher died in a car crash Tuesday afternoon.
It happened on Highway 80 and Campground Road, just outside of Wrens.
The driver was 28-year-old Heidi Hernandez, a Spanish teacher at Jefferson County High School. Hernandez was in the car with her boyfriend, English teacher and tennis coach Steven Jones.
They were heading home when they crashed around 6:36 p.m.
Georgia State troopers say Hernandez tried to cross Highway 80 when she was hit on the driver's side by an oncoming Chevy Impala. Hernandez died at the scene and Jones was transported to GHSU Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the Chevy Impala is said to have non-life-threatening injuries as well. Troopers say Hernandez was at fault in the crash.
We're told Jones and Hernandez had recently bought a home in Martinez and were planning to get married.
