AUGUSTA, Ga. -- You heard it here first on News 12. The short list of names for Augusta's New U is being revised.
"We've had countless emails, calls, and letters," said Susan Barcus, chief development officer at GHSU. "We would have been happy to be finished, but clearly, we had some work to do."
Leaders say they have received more than 3,000 survey responses. Two back-to-back petitions from community leaders and students both called for reassessment.
"We got all of the feedback," Barcus said. "The committee is meeting again, and we'll have a fresh list of six names."
Augusta University, University of Augusta, Arsenal University, Augusta Arsenal University, Bartram University and Noble University left a lot to be desired.
"We all applied to the Medical College of Georgia," said Elizabeth Prince-Coleman, president of the physician assistant class. "So to learn that we are going to graduate from a school that doesn't have the word medical or health sciences in the name and doesn't even include the name Georgia is very disappointing to us."
We asked administrators and students to grade the initial short list.
"I would say we passed because it created a lot of thought," said Helen Hendee with ASU Alumni Relations.
Students drafted their own short list with a focus on Georgia and the arts and sciences.
"I was not happy with any of the names," Prince-Coleman said. "I feel like I speak for quite a few students when I say that."
"We're open to that," Barcus said. "We are seeing how that responds with folks. So stay tuned."
There is a branding committee meeting this Wednesday. Those "fresh" names must be presented this week. That committee will then narrow those six names down to three. Keep in mind, the Board of Regents in Atlanta will have the final say.
