AIKEN CO., S.C. (WRDW)--Another school year has started for Aiken County schools and, this year, several students are heading back to class under new leadership.

"We're very excited, we're thrilled to have our students back," said John Murphy.

Murphy is one of those new leaders---now principal at North Augusta High School, after spending the last four years as principal of Paul Knox Middle School.

"It's good to be back at North Augusta High School," said Murphy. "I spent a couple years as assistant principal here so I know a lot of the people here and certainly being at the local middle school I know approximately half of our students."

Murphy's new position left a vacancy at Paul Knox, which added to the six other principal vacancies across the county. Six of those seven total vacancies have now been filled for the start of the year.

But, parents and students at Wagener-Salley High School still aren't sure who will be in charge this year.

"I'm transitioning into my new role as director of adult education and I'm currently the acting principal of Wagener-Salley," said former Wagener-Salley High principal Pat Keating.

Until a new principal is in the works, Keating says he'll continue as acting principal to help make the transition a smooth one.

"Our district has done a great job with its infrastructure," said Keating. "They have procedure and protocols in place. Change is inevitable."

Tonight, marks one step closer to a decision as the public is invited to a community input meeting where parents can share what they want in a new principal.

"As far as qualifications, what their expectations are, what their recommendations are to make sure that we do get the best person in this office," Keating explained.

The community input meeting is tonight, Tuesday August 20 at 5:00 pm in the Wagener-Salley auditorium. Teachers and faculty will be having an input meeting at the campus at 3:30 pm.
