Columbia Co. Commission passes resolution asking Board of Regents to 'reconsider' name of 'New U'

COLUMBIA COUNTY, Ga. -- Even the Columbia County Commission is weighing in on the name of the "New U."

The commission adopted a resolution Tuesday night requesting the Board of Regents to "reconsider" the name of Georgia Regents University.

The resolution reads:

"Resolution of the board of commissioners of Columbia County, Georgia, requesting the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia reconsider the name of the consolidated Augusta State and Georgia Health Sciences Universities.

This Resolution adopted by the Board of Commissioners of Columbia County, Georgia (the "Board").

WHEREAS, the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia voted on August 7, 2012, to name the consolidated Augusta State University and Georgia Health Sciences University as Georgia Regents University, and;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD and it is hereby resolved by the authority of same, that the Columbia County Board of Commissioners requests the Board of Regents reconsider the name of the consolidated universities for one more appropriate for the region.

ADOPTED August 21, 2012."
