LINCOLN COUNTY, Ga.--He's the head football coach who found himself in the middle of a school board scuffle. He was arrested earlier this week, charged with simple battery after a disagreement at a board of education meeting in Lincoln County got physical. For the first time, we're hearing Coach Larry Campbell's side of the story.

Campbell, his wife, son, and attorney all sat down to tell the Coach's side of the story. He's been in front of TV cameras many times during his coaching career, usually following one of his 11 state title wins, but Friday, he came in quietly and remained silent while his lawyer did the talking.

"Coach Campbell apologizes for touching Mr. Glass. Coach Campbell has offered to personally apologize to Mr. Glass with his counsel present," Attorney Vic Hawk said.

He read additional statements that touched on Coach Campbell's upstanding history as a football coach in Lincoln County, and what Campbell says happened during this weeks board of education meeting.

"There was never any criminal intent on behalf of Coach Campbell," Hawk said.

The coach admits to placing his hands on the victim's shirt and telling him to stop making disparaging remarks about his son, but the victim says the coach also threatened his life.

"At no time, at no time, did Mr. Campbell threaten to kill or harm Mr. Glass. Coach Campbell would not do so. The citizens of Lincoln County know that to be true," his attorney stated.

The Police Chief in Lincolnton says no witnesses have come forward to confirm any threats, so they will not be charging him for that.

"That is something the complainant is going to have to come forward with himself...Talk to the magistrate judges to see if he may be able to pursue warrants there. As far as Lincolnton Police Department, we cannot and will not," he said.

It's a mar on an otherwise spotless reputation for Coach Campbell, that is putting a lot of people in a difficult situation. Even the police chief played football for the coach, something he says, won't affect the investigation.

"This investigation is handled no differently from anybody else out here. He's going to be treated the same as the average 'Joe Blow' on the street," Chief Gene Poss said.

The next step will be for a Superior Court to hear the case and decide whether there is enough evidence for Larry Campbell to be indicted for simple battery charges.

Coach Campbell announced his retirement a month ago. He will serve as athletic director and head football coach of Lincoln County High School until the end of the school year.
