City tries to help GRU expand throughout Augusta

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- Georgia Regents University could be expanding throughout parts of Augusta. City leaders are trying to join forces and make that a reality.

Although it's just a concept right now and a lot of details will have to be finalized, elected leaders say this move could mean more money for the city.

The old, rundown, peeling paint and barely hanging on Sibley and King Mills could be put to good use in the near future.

"This is all in its infancy phases right now. It has the full support of the city and full support of the commission," said Mayor Deke Copenhaver.

"This is an opportunity for us to do something great for the city and college. It's something our young people can grab a hold on," said Mayor Pro Tem Corey Johnson.

Recently, the mayor and a few of the commissioners, along with Matthew Kwatinets of the nonprofit ARC, presented proposals to GRU officials. They are working to bring a downtown campus as well.

"Basically bringing together a lot of threads that would help us to create something unique not like Columbus State," Kwatinets said.

Leaders say the expansion could mean more dollars spent at local businesses, Georgia Regents University and more money for the city.

"It's something we finally put on paper. It's something we are looking forward to making a reality," Johnson said.

A reality in black and white that's going to take some green to make it happen.
