ATLANTA, Ga. -- It was a win 25 years in the making. After trailing 14-0 and barely touching the ball most of the first half, the Bears turned the tables on Peach County, winning the school's first Class AAA state championship, 28-14 Saturday in the Georgia Dome.
Sophomore Donquell Green scored a 13-yard touchdown with 2:43 remaining to cap the scoring, and the defense did the rest.
When the Bears took the ball with 4:45 left in the first half, they trailed 14-0 and only held the ball for 4:23 of the previous 19 minutes. That all changed when Green completed a deep pass to Kadarius Burdette. Then, Burke County took over on the ground, capping the drive with a plunge into the endzone.
In the second half, it was all Bears. Burke County scored on a 31-yard Green run, and a Mayton two-point conversion tied it at 14.
Then, on the final possession of the third quarter, Mayton got in from a yard out once again for the Bears' first lead of the game.
All that was left was another Green touchdown and a celebration.
